Tall Ships Residential Opportunity with the Atlantic Youth Trust

The Atlantic Youth Trust has teamed up with The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and Gaisce – The President’s Award to offer two young people, one from DofE and one from Gaisce the opportunity to participate in a 10 day Tall Ships voyage around New Zealand on the Spirit of New Zealand.  And the good news is that this can count towards the Residential section of your Gold programme!

You’ll be one of a small number of young people who will get on board to experience the trip of a life time. The 10 day programme can at times be mentally and physically demanding with activities including sailing, swimming and hiking.

You’ll leave with a whole new set of skills, lots of new friends and new confidence to take on the challenges in life. It’s not about just learning to sail – you will develop self-esteem, teamwork, leadership and communication skills.

By taking part you’ll improve your communication and leadership skills, learn the importance of self-awareness and being a part of a team. As you face the various challenges, your confidence will increase as you increasingly move outside of your comfort zone.

You will meet other young people from a wide range of backgrounds and cultures. Over the 10 days you will come to depend on each other, learn tolerance and acceptance and create close and lasting bonds.

Participants must:

  • be aged between 16 -17 years (16 on or before 01/01/18 and no older than 17)
  • meet the medical criteria of the voyage
  • agree to the code of conduct/terms and conditions of the voyage
  • Provide medical confirmation of fitness to travel

Application forms are available here. Applications should be returned by Monday 6 November 12noon to: [email protected]

Bronze Awards for Fire Cadets

Congratulations to all the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service Cadets from Cookstown and Newry who received their Bronze Awards at Cookstown Fire Station on Friday.

The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service has been offering the Joint Award Initiative programme for the last 2 years and it's fantastic to see the second cohort achieving their Awards.  It is also great to see some of those who have already achieved their Bronze Awards helping out as Leaders.

A big thank you to all the Leaders and families for their support in helping the Cadets to reach this stage.
